For this week's graduate spotlight, we get to hear Evelyn's story. She has experienced the transformation from a life of uncertainty and despair to one guided by God’s purpose. This testimony is one of faith and service. Check out how Evelyn gives back by sharing what has been given to her.
There was a lot of chaos and brokenness in my childhood. My innocence was taken away from me at an early age. My mom did the best she could. My father was in and out of my life until he died when I was 11. Then, my only brother died when I was 15 by taking his own life. I had many unanswered questions from my youth, but I can’t say that my parents didn’t love me and my brother. They did the best they could with the lifestyle we lived. From then on, my life spiraled out of control. When I got to the Mission, I was a shelter guest with 3 out of 4 of my children. It wasn’t long until I realized that I needed to join the New Life Program. During that time, I allowed the Lord to really work on me, and he did just that! A part-time position opened up and I was offered the job. I accepted with joy and not too long after, I was offered a full-time position. I give all glory to God. I now get the opportunity to work side-by-side with the staff that poured into me at my worst points. I am so blessed to do what God calls me to do every day which is to love and serve our guests. They come in and need the love of the Lord and we are here to give it. I also get to help guide the current ladies in the NLP and also facilitate a class for the men and women NLP. I am learning case management and I practice those skills with our shelter guests. I was in such a bad place when I showed up to the mission and now, I wake up every day with joy. I get to pour into others, what God did for me. I take the time to encourage others here and help them find housing or other services and I get to go home to my kids at night. The Lord provided that for me and my family. I am so thankful to everyone that plays a part in the Mission. I will forever remember how my life has changed.
