The purpose of the Modesto Gospel Mission goes well beyond just feeding and housing men, women, and children. We work to come alongside the broken and suffering and reveal to them the possibility of true and holistic life-transformation through the power of our savior Jesus. This change has tangible effects on all aspects of a person’s life. To that end, we are always looking for new ways to equip and train our New Life Program participants to meet the demands of the world ‘outside’ the Mission. Volente Coffee Roasters is the Mission’s new social enterprise to tackle one aspect of this training.
The Mission has officially launched a social enterprise centered around teaching the men and women of our programs new job skills, a hearty work ethic, and the intangibles that make good employees. Volente Coffee Roasters is a small, for-profit division of the Mission, which focuses on roasting raw coffee beans for use at the Mission and for sale to individuals, churches, and businesses. New Life Program disciples will work with Mission staff to roast and package the coffee beans, track inventory, comply with OSHA rules for safety, meet food processing and sanitation best practices, engage in marketing and sales, and practice great customer service. We believe that our disciples will greatly benefit from this work and training, and this will help them prepare for full-time employment after their graduation from our programs. In addition, every dollar of net profit from selling coffee will go directly back to our programs! At $15 per bag of premium, fair-trade coffee, the Mission will see over $10 per bag go towards transforming the lives of individuals who desperately need it.
Quality and taste are paramount, and that starts with the roasters. Meet two of our initial awesome roasters, Mike and Jonathan. Both of these men came to the Mission desperate for help. While they both had real-world work experience, as part of their recovery pathway, they needed an opportunity to improve their skill sets to compete in the marketplace for living wages. They came into Volente and have been training to roast coffee and have been learning about operations and sales. These men work hard while having fun, and this is the reason Volente exists.
